General Finishes Products

General Finishes was founded in 1928 by a Milwaukee lumber company to make finishes for their cabinet-shop customers, and now makes some of the highest-quality paints and stains in the world.

General Finishes carries Milk Paint, Chalk Style Paint, Glaze Effects, Pearl Effects, Wood Stains, and durable Topcoats - all formulated for low odor, low VOC, water clean-up, and noncombustible.

Oil-based products are also available, including the famous Arm-R-Seal topcoats, Gel and Oil Wood Stains, and Outdoor Oil for exterior products.

General Finishes Signature Milk Paints

General Finishes Milk Paint is a premium interior/exterior mineral based paint named for its low-luster sheen, which mimics the look of old-world furniture paint.

It is not a powdered, casein-based milk paint, but a premixed modern version that is so durable it does not require a topcoat unless you want to increase the sheen.

Milk Paint can be used over an existing finish (be sure to prep clean and sand, and test a small area for adhesion). It is an exterior-rated product and ideal for outdoor projects.

General Finishes Gel Stains

General Finishes Gel Stains

Gel Stain from General Finishes is home of the popular Java Gel Stain featured across the nation's social media for upcycling furniture and cabinets.

Gel wood stains are heavy-bodied and do not penetrate as deeply into the wood as liquid oil-based wipe-on stains do, providing the deepest, richest colors of any oil-based stain available.

Gel Stains can be mixed together at any ratio to make more color options. Since it is an oil-based finish, it is not recommended for outdoor use unless your furniture will be resting under cover and will not be exposed to direct water.
